I am a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner- Board Certified (PMHNP-BC) who provides mental health service by focusing on the treatment and medication management of individuals who struggle with the day to day challenges of mental health disorders.
In mental health most of the information professionals gather
comes from what the someone tells them, a family member,
a friend, another professional involved in care, or the individual being
treated.
I want anyone who enters my office to feel we are a team. Their
position on the team is to tell me. in the best way that they can, what brought them to see me, experiences, struggles, and what goals did they have in mind when deciding to reach out for help.
Only you know what you are feeling!
My part is to use the the information that they gave me and offer what I believe would be the treatment that would offer the best outcome.
This could be certain medications, referrals for a specific type of therapy, higher level of care (such as intensive out patient therapy),
or referral to a Registered Dietician.
Then we work together to come up with a treatment strategy.
At any time during this discussion their is a medication side effects that they can not tolerate for any reason. I want to know
For example I make it a priority to notify patients with eating disorders
the likelihood of a medication causing weight gain.
Why prescribe a medication for mental health if you're not mindful of an individual's complete mental wellbeing.
My job is to help you. It is not a job I take for granted.
It is a great privilege for someone to allow you to treat something as
complex and beautiful as their mind.
It is an honor to be trusted enough to have someone tell you problems,
stories, memories, or events that have caused them and still cause
them pain.
The World Health Organization (WHO), 2002,discussed how services and treatment outcomes in mental healthcare improved when individuals who had lived experience of mental illness themselves were involved in the service provided. Those with lived experience are also shown to improve awareness and decrease stigma on mental health disorders and seeking treatment.
I am an individual with lived experience. I can remember starting to struggle with my mental health at four years old, and it has been a lifelong battle, but worth the fight. I have spent time in acute psychiatric hospitals, residential facilities, and partial hospitalization programs. I have had my fair share of healthcare providers who did not listen, did not see me, and did not take the time to allow me to feel like my mental health was worth saving.
When I understood it was not only me who was being dismissed, but a world of people who were hurting my point of view changed.
I used my pain as a motivation to heal, to find stability, work within mental health services, so that I could let other know their mental health is worth saving
I previously met the criteria for several different eating disorders and borderline personality disorder. Because of this I have first hand experience of how hard it is to find knowledgeable individuals or even willing individuals who will treat these conditions. BPD is often misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder (however, you can have both), and many individuals who have BPD have eating disorders. I do my best to try to keep up on the most up to date research on both. Although there are no approved medications for BPD, and very few for eating disorders I treat these conditions like I treat every other condition, based on the symptoms and additional factors (other medications, medical conditions, previously tried medications) for each individual
I obtained my RN license almost 10 years ago. I worked in long term care/ skilled nursing facilities before working in mental health. I have worked in both long term and acute mental health hospitals gaining experience treating a wide variety of mental health conditions.
